Mariners Pop Royals, 9-2
|
The Seattle 1998 Mariners knocked off the Kansas City 1977 Royals, 9-2, at Kingdome. Jay Buhner was a big reason Seattle 1998 won. The right fielder was 2 for 5 with 2 home runs. He drove in 4 runs and scored twice. Jeff Fassero, the winning pitcher, is now 5-3. He went 7 innings, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits, while fanning 4 and walking 2. The Mariners go to 26-40 with the win.
With Seattle 1998 leading 4-1 in the bottom of the third, Buhner hit a fastball from Paul Splittorff for a 3-run home run. It was his 10th home run of the season and put the Mariners ahead, 7-1.
Said losing manager Kelly Audia: "It's very easy to sit in an ivory tower and critique the pitching, but the bottom line is we need to score runs."
